Does covid vaccine cause bell's palsy

Covid 19 vaccine and bell's palsy side effect

Does the Covid-19 vaccine cause facial paralysis as social media posts claim?

Several messages shared thousands of times, in particular by MEP Gilbert Collard, report cases of Bell's palsy after clinical trials of the Pfizer vaccine.

While the European Medicines Agency will look at the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine against Covid-19 next week, which could be quickly available in the European Union, many messages alert on the side effects that have been observed during the clinical trial. There is one particularly that is highlighted: Bell's palsy, which affects half of the face. For several days, the rather distressing photos of people with partially deformed faces have been increasing on Facebook. They were even shared by the MEP of the National Rally, Gilbert Collard who denounces a "vaccine roulette".

Four cases during clinical trial

There have been several cases in clinical trials: four for Pfizer's vaccine and three for Moderna's. However, what the publications on social networks do not say is that these side effects did not concern the United States Medicines Agency more than that, which still gave the green light for Pfizer's vaccine. The first doses have already been administered to Americans.

And there are several reasons why the US Medicines Agency isn't worried more than that. First, with 4 cases per 22,000 people who participated in clinical trials, this represents an average of 18 cases per 100,000 people, which is very close to the incidence of this disease in the general population. According to the US Medicines Agency, the link between Bell's palsy and the vaccine has therefore not been established because there are too few cases, but the FDA has nevertheless recommended increased surveillance for safety.

Another reason not to worry: Bell's palsy is usually temporary and not serious, like most side effects experienced by those in the cohort who participated in clinical trials. 80% of those vaccinated had pain where they were stung or they felt fatigue, headaches or even stiffness.
