Torticollis |
What is it?
Torticollis or Neck pain rarely called stiff necks are common. Although usually mild, they can be extremely painful. Simple actions can help prevent or relieve them. But sometimes it is necessary to resort to pain medication.
What are the symptoms of torticollis?
When a person has pain in the neck, the muscles in the back of the neck are hard and tight. The movements of his head become painful, and in some cases, the pain radiates to his back or arms. Muscle pains sometimes turn out to be such that it becomes impossible to keep your head straight: it is torticollis (and not torticoli, torticolli or torticollia ...). Sometimes neck pain is associated with a burning or tingling sensation in the arm and hand: this is cervicobrachial neuralgia.
Some people suffer from a progressive and sometimes permanent form of torticollis, spasmodic torticollis or dystonia of the neck muscles. Gradually, the head tilts to one side, drops to a shoulder, or leans forward or backward, over a period of several weeks or months.
What are the possible complications of torticollis?
When the pain and stiffness is due to a simple muscle contracture, there are no complications. Herniated discs in the neck should be monitored: additional examinations (electromyography EMG) are performed to identify the type of nerve fibers that are affected by the herniation. If nerve fibers responsible for controlling movement of the arm and hand (motor fibers) are affected, surgery may be needed to free the intervertebral disc that is pressing.
